For the Comfort of Mourners
Death is not more mysterious than life. Death is not a cessation of existence…death is but the elimination of the tools for terrestrial adjustment and the elevation of the being to a higher state of life. (One need have) the consciousness that he lives in the hand of a kindly Power, whose sole care is the destiny of those whom He brought into existence…
The soul in man is an invisible current emanating from the Universal Soul, it is a beam of light from the Infinite Fountain of Light, it is a streamlet of life flowing from the great Ocean of life, it is an infinitesimal portion of vitality and energy from the vast Reservoir of infinite power and strength. The real content and substance of man, i.e., his soul, is completely divine…Man's soul is like a ray of divine illumination. God does not give away the ray, for the ray cannot exist independently of the light. This ray which is the human soul can never be snuffed out, because it comes from the eternal light, from God. Man's soul is immortal, for the source from which it emanates is immortal. Expression of sorrow for the departed may assuage the wounded emotions, but to abandon oneself to grief is sinful; it shows a lack of faith in God's mercy, a lack of belief in God's kindness. Man must believe that in death he leaves the entrance-room and goes into the parlor, that he closes his physical eyes in order to see greater light…In the dark hour, a man may find it impossible to avoid the pit of despair, and may fall into it despite…his will and reasoning. In such a moment, as in every other critical moment of life, one should utilize the great instrument within his own hands – prayer.
Death, therefore, is no calamity, it is an elevation. We must regard it with hope and trust in the goodness of God that whatever He created was not for the sake of annihilation, but for growth.
